CARNIVAL OF HEARTS 2003
The sleevenotes to 1998's Album 'Low Profile' mention that Pound
has visited the Caribbean for many years; On previous Albums,
this influence had only surfaced occasionally but here it's
finally given full rein. From the moody opener 'She Devil' we're
taken on subtle , stylistic tour of the islands. From the frothy
calypso of Barbados to the deep skank of Jamaica via the samba
grooves of Cuba - all nicely skewed through Pound's sly wit
and distinctive, individual style. Surrounding himself with
some great players, including long time collaborators Kenny
Craddock [Hammond Organ] and Colin Gibson [Fender bass], he's
managed to fashion a richly varied record. with the accompanying
5 track e.p. 'Dance without Music' providing a nicely downbeat
finale. In an age of one-trick-ponies, it's refreshing to encounter
a genuinely versatile artist. You could do a lot worse than
to make this the soundtrack to your summer. So, in the man's
own words, 'go on, be a devil.' - Phil Wright
